What shape is the universe?
Einstein believed that the universe was curved. Other scientists thought it was round. But now we know that they were wrong. A team of international researchers have proved that the universe is flat!
The researchers conducted the Boomerang Project in the Antarctic. They hung a very sensitive telescope from a balloon which they flew at an altitude of 40,000 metres above the Antarctic. With the telescope, they made nearly one billion measurements of light from distant space. They were able to draw a map of the universe when it was only 300,000 million years old. They used the map to calculate the shape of the universe.
Another important result of this study is the prediction that the universe will continue expanding forever.
