Notting Hill – the Carnival
Notting Hill Carnival is the biggest street carnival in Europe. It takes place on the last weekend of August and attracts huge numbers of people. Notting Hill is an area of London with a very high Afro-Caribbean immigrant population. The Carnival started in 1964 as a Trinidadian-style children's street party with steel bands for music. At first, it was popular with black immigrant families. But now it is a multi-racial event which celebrates non-violence. The Carnival has grown every year and today nearly 2 million people attend it.
The first day is children's day. There is a procession of costumed bands and decorated floats along a three-mile route through Notting Hill. The second day is for adults with traditional steel bands providing the music from morning till night.
