World Cup
The 2006 football World Cup will take place in Germany. The decision was taken by the 24-man committee of Fifa, football’s governing body. In the second round of votes, Britain was eliminated. Germany beat South Africa in the final round by 12 votes to 11. It was a great disappointment for South Africa and for the African continent as a whole. There was a lot of unpleasantness and accusations of bribery surrounding the final round of voting. This caused the New Zealand delegate, Charles Dempsey, to withdraw at the last minute from the voting thus causing the defeat of South Africa. The South Africans challenged the decision legally and asked for a review of the decision. The decision to hold the Cup in Germany was later confirmed.
