The Six Nations Tournament
In the year 2000 the famous Five Nations Rugby Tournament ceased to exist and become the Six Nations Tournament. Italy has joined France, England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland in the oldest and most colourful European rugby tournament.
The tournament started in 1882 when the English rugby team played Wales in Swansea and beat them. The following year Scotland and Ireland took part in the tournament which was then called the International Championship. It wasn't until 1910 that France joined the tournament and it became the Five Nations.
The tournament takes place every year during the winter months. Each team plays every other team once only. If a team wins all its matches it wins the Grand Slam. If a team loses all its matches, it gets the Wooden Spoon.
All the teams have had golden years and others when they have struggled. Wales dominated the tournament in the seventies when they won it four times, including three Grand Slams. In the eighties it was France's turn to dominate. They won the title three times with two Grand Slams.
