Ramadan

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Muslim calendar which is based on the moon and therefore is held at a different time every year. Muslims all around the world celebrate the Feast of Ramadan which is a time of worship and community feeling.

During the entire month, Muslims are not supposed to eat or drink during daylight hours. No smoking is allowed either and toothpaste cannot be used! Some people are not expected to fast, including children, pregnant women, the elderly and the sick.

But Muslims do not go hungry during Ramadan because the fast is only during the daylight hours. They eat a very big meal before dawn and at sunset they break their fast with prayers and a traditional meal of dates and water.

During the last three days of Ramadan, Muslims celebrate Eid Al Fitr. They dress up in their best clothes and go to the mosque to pray. It is traditional to visit friends and relatives, exchange gifts and share celebratory meals.

Ramadan is supposed to help Muslims to focus on their spiritual lives. They are expected to show compassion to others and to help the poor. But above all, the shared experience creates a community feeling amongst Muslims worldwide.
