Notting Hill – the Carnival
Europe's biggest street Carnival is held every year at the end of August in the London neighbourhood of Notting Hill. This is a part of London with a very high Afro-Caribbean immigrant population. In the late 50's and early 60's there was a lot of racial tension in this part of London. The black community developed its own forms of entertainment to express its culture and Trinidadian-style steel bands became very popular.
The Carnival started as a children's street party in 1964. The street party became an annual event and grew in size. Gradually it turned into the multi-racial, two-day Carnival we know today which celebrates non-violence.
The Carnival is held on the Sunday and Monday August bank holiday. The Sunday is children's day with over 75 bands and hundreds of decorated floats which parade along a three-mile route through Notting Hill. There are also several stages with live performances of the best steel bands.
