It’s Wimbledon time again
The oldest and most famous of all tennis tournaments takes place in London every year and lasts two weeks. The Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Championships is one of the four Grand Slam competitions on the tennis world circuit. Wimbledon is unique because the games are played on grass courts. This is the fastest and most difficult surface to play on. Especially when it rains which happens quite often! The first competition took place in 1877. In that year there were only British players and only the men’s singles event. In 1884, the Ladies’ Singles started.
By the end of the century, Wimbledon had become an important international competition and in 1907 an Australian became the first non-Briton to win the event. Since then, only two players from Britain have won at Wimbledon! In recent years, many records have been broken.
Martina Navratilova is the all-time greatest ladies’ champion. She won the singles’ event nine times during her career.
