Cc the cloned cat
Instead of pouring money into finding an Aids vaccine or new ways of treating cancer, a team of American scientists are working on a much more exciting and profitable project – cloning pets. Scientists from a company called Genetic Savings and Clone recently announced that they have succeeded in cloning the first cat ever. The two-month-old kitten is called Cc which stands for carbon copy.
They spent three years trying to clone a dog but failed for reasons they do not really understand. Then they tried to clone a cat. They created 87 embryos and implanted them into surrogate mothers. Only one developed and the result was Cc, born on 22nd December, 2001. Now the company hopes to improve the cloning techniques and offer to replace people’s beloved pets for a lot of money.
