Snooker
The Embassy World Championships is an important competition in the snooker calendar. Snooker is a very popular game in the UK. People usually play it in pubs, but it is also a popular game to watch on television.
So what is snooker and where does it come from? Snooker is similar to billiards, and it probably came to England from France in the 16th century. It is only quite recently that it has become important, and it is now a very popular pub game. Most of the big competitions are held in Britain and the top players are largely from Britain or Commonwealth countries.
Like billiards, you play snooker on a big table with six pockets. The table is covered with a green cloth. There are fifteen red balls, six coloured balls and one white cue ball. Two players take it in turns to strike the cue ball with a cue and cause it to knock the other balls into the pockets. You score points depending on which balls you get into the pockets.
