Independence Day
Independence Day is the national holiday of the United States of America and it commemorates the signing of the Declaration of Independence on 4 July 1776, in Philadelphia. It marked the start of the War of Independence against England.
Every year there are celebrations around the country. It is traditional to have picnics and barbecues, and there are also spectacular firework displays in all the big cities.
These days, after the terrorist attack of September 11 2001, the day is marked by huge security operations to guard against terrorists. In Washington alone more than 2,000 police and FBI agents are on duty to protect the city.
