Level 2 – Pre-intermediate
Chinese traditional medicine
There are more than two hundred bear farms in China. Seven thousand bears live in terrible conditions on these farms. The Chinese have no interest in these animals and they let the ‘farmers’ catch wild bears and torture them for years. These ‘farmers’ keep the bears for their bile. The bears live for years in small cages and they can’t even stand up. They suffer a lot when the ‘farmers’ take the bile. The bile is used in traditional medicine and in products like shampoo.
The Chinese sell almost half of the bear bile abroad. Bear bile is very expensive. In Japan, it costs more than $250 a gram in shops. The World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) believe that the Asian brown bear may become extinct in China because of this illegal trade.
