Tigers threatened in Russia

There are only an estimated four hundred Siberian tigers left in the wild. This magnificent wild cat is usually very shy and usually keeps well away from human beings and populated areas. However, recently, temperatures in eastern Siberia have been exceptionally cold and many animals such as reindeer and wild boars, which tigers feed on have died. This has forced tigers to get closer to human populations and attack domestic animals. And it became easy for professional poachers with highly sophisticated equipment to kill the animals which are worth a small fortune on the black market.

Although tigers are legally protected in Russia, there are too few officials to stop poaching and most of them do not have modern equipment. Also, the penalty for killing a tiger in Russia is only a fine and this doesn’t stop anyone. In nearby China, the law is much more severe and a poacher risks the death sentence.
