European levels:

The levels of language command are classified by the Common European Framework which is an internationally recognised classification of exams and levels accepted by the Council of Europe. The system thoroughly defines the range of language skills which must be mastered by the learners of a language to be able to communicate in it, and to ensure that the communication is set properly in any given sociolinguistic context.

The levels classified by the system:

The Edinburgh International Festival

Every summer in August the world’s biggest arts festival, the Edinburgh International Festival, takes place in Scotland. It was held for the first time in 1947. This first festival was quite small but there were some of the world’s best productions of music, dance, theatre and opera. Since then the festival has grown in both size and reputation. Today there are more than 100 productions and concerts by artists from all over the world.

There are a number of other festivals at the same time as the International Festival, the largest of which is the Fringe. This started as a small event and has now become enormous. Today there are over 1000 productions on the Fringe ranging from rap to opera or classical ballet to tap dancing. There is also an enormously popular Military Tattoo, a Jazz Festival, a Book Festival and a Film Festival. As well as the festivals there are all sorts of street entertainers on the Royal Mile, a historic street near the Edinburgh’s castle.

In fact there are so many exciting things to choose from that the main problem for the visitor is deciding what to see. There is so much going on that every year there are critics who say that the different festivals should not be held at the same time. But the Festival is so popular now and it attracts so many visitors from many different countries that most people believe it should stay as it is. And this seems quite likely, if only because the festival has created over 4,000 jobs in Scotland and is very important for the economy of Edinburgh.
