San Fermin bull-running festival

The spectacular running of bulls in the Spanish town of Pamplona is held every year in July, attracting hundreds of thousands of Spaniards and foreign tourists. This annual festival dates back to 1591, when the bulls were run through the town to take them to the arena. Nowadays tough security measures have been introduced, with barriers lining the streets to prevent the bulls from attacking spectators.

The festival starts with a firework display. Every night there are parties and concerts, and in the mornings there are bull runs. Six bulls are released from an enclosure into the street at a distance of 825 metres from the arena. Hundreds of young men wearing white clothes and red scarves run ahead of the bulls, trying to avoid being knocked over. In the evening the bulls are killed by matadors in the bull ring.

It's a dangerous event and every year there are people injured, but there hasn't been a death since 1995. Pamplona's mayor said that many sports were more dangerous, but the authorities were finding it difficult to cope with all the tourists.
