Independence Day

Independence Day is the official anniversary of the creation of the United States of America. It commemorates the signing of the Declaration of Independence on 4th July 1776 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. At the time, the US consisted of 13 colonies under the rule of the English king, George III. The signing of the declaration was also the start of the war with England.

Today the day is a national holiday; people celebrate by having picnics and barbecues and there are big firework displays in the cities.

These days, after 9/11, the day is marked by huge security operations to guard against possible terrorist attacks. In Washington alone more than 2,000 police and FBI agents, many in civilian clothes, were spread around the city.
