Genetically modified food
The issue of genetically modified food has become a major controversy in Britain. The government is in favour of allowing biotechnology companies to develop genetically modified crops for public consumption. However, the public reaction has been so strong that the government is reconsidering its position.
Many people are concerned about long-term health and environmental consequences. They don't believe that enough research has been done. They don't trust the big companies who are developing the new plants and animals. They say they are only interested in profits and are not concerned about public safety.
In the US there are already over 40 genetically engineered products on the market and many more being developed. For example, scientists have discovered that by taking a specific gene from a fish and putting it into a strawberry, you can produce fruit in cold conditions. But many people believe that by mixing genes from different species, we will inevitably create problems. Unfortunately, we have no way of knowing what these problems are likely to be. This is why people are saying that we should wait until more research has been done.
