Badminton
Badminton, which is a very ancient game, has only been an Olympic sport since the Barcelona games in 1992. Badminton was first played a very long time ago. Its origins date back two thousand years to the game of battledore and shuttlecock which was played in ancient Greece, India and China. As far back as the 5th century BC, the Chinese played a game called Ti Jian Zi with a feathered shuttlecock which may be the earliest form of badminton.
The modern game gets its name from Badminton House in Britain. This was the home of the Duke of Beauford, who brought the game from India, in the 19th century. Towards the end of the 19th century, the game began to spread to most parts of the British Commonwealth. But since 1934, when the International Badminton Federation was born, the Chinese and Indonesians have won most of the big competitions.
